Mid-Michigan winters are less about one big storm and more about months of gray skies and cold floors. A few small upgrades in October make every evening from November to March more comfortable.
Warm the room you actually use
Heating the whole house to stay comfortable in one room is expensive. A ceramic space heater takes the chill out of a home office or bedroom quickly.
Safety first: keep any space heater at least three feet from beds, curtains and paper, plug it straight into the wall rather than an extension cord, and turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
Upgrade the bed before the thermostat
Breathable cotton sheets, a supportive memory foam pillow and a weighted blanket make a cold room feel welcoming without turning up the heat.
Test every alarm
Furnaces, heaters and candles all get more use in winter. Press the test button on each smoke alarm, replace batteries that are more than a year old and consider a hardwired smoke alarm for hallways near bedrooms.
Keep one fire blanket in the kitchen
A fire blanket hung near the stove smothers a small pan fire in seconds and needs no training. Pair it with an extinguisher by the back door.
The simple version: one heater used safely, one better bed, every alarm tested, one fire blanket by the stove. Done before Halloween.
